The Bachelor in Performing Arts (Hons) will prepare you for a combined degree in the Performing Arts with an emphasis on an interdisciplinary approach. The course allows you to take study-units from three different performance disciplines 譅Dance Studies, Music Studies, and Theatre Studies 譅and follow a programme of study according to your aspirations by registering for specific study-units on offer in the course catalogue. This approach at combining resources from the three disciplines in the School of Performing Arts (SPA) allows you to formulate and follow tailor-made programmes of your own personal choice. You will be required to register for 60 ECTS credits every year, which will be divided approximately equally from the three areas of study offered by SPA. You will have the chance to demonstrate your newly acquired knowledge of the subject by writing a dissertation in combined performing arts, involving at least two, or all three disciplines.

Communication and Academic Skills Programme

The communication and academic skills programme complements students’ main course of study. It introduces them to writing and presenting as situated within academic contexts sensitive to specific disciplines and develops their competences for future careers.

Students are required to choose study-units to the value of 52 ECTS credits from the elective study-units on offer during the year and 8 ECTS credits from the optional study-units, for a total of 60 ECTS credits for the year. The total number of study-units taken must be shared approximately equally among the three areas of study.

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Undergraduate Awards, 2019 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of the Bachelor in Performing Arts (Honours) - B.Perf. Arts (Hons) - under the auspices of the School of Performing Arts.

By the end of the course, you will be knowledgeable on:

  • key practitioners, practices and theorists of performance, which may include writers, critics, directors, producers, actors, dancers, musicians, composers, designers, choreographers, etc.;
  • historical and contemporary contexts of the production and reception of theory and performance;
  • the relationship of performance (its making and reception) to its material, cultural and historical contexts, forms and traditions of performance (and other disciplines contributing to performance), and theoretical explanations of their impact;
  • traditional and contemporary critical perspectives on performance, and of relevant theories, issues, and debates informing performance and the academic subject;
  • the interplay between theory and practice; and
  • the processes and components by which theory and performance are created, realised and managed.

The three-year programme will be taught in a balanced mix of classroom-based and studio-based study-units, most of which combine theoretical and practical experiential approaches and assessment. The Bachelor in Performing Arts (Hons) provides opportunities for you to develop and demonstrate knowledge and understanding, qualities, skills, and other attributes, in the following areas:

  1. Subject Knowledge and Understanding of:
    1. key practitioners, practices and theorists of performance, which may include writers, critics, directors, producers, actors, dancers, musicians, composers, designers, choreographers, etc.;
    2. historical and contemporary contexts of the production and reception of theory and performance;
    3. the relationship of performance (its making and reception) to its material, cultural and historical contexts, forms and traditions of performance (and other disciplines contributing to performance), and theoretical explanations of their impact;
    4. traditional and contemporary critical perspectives on performance, and of relevant theories, issues, and debates informing performance and the academic subject;
    5. the interplay between theory and practice;
    6. the processes and components by which theory and performance are created, realised and managed;
    7. the impact of dance, music, and theatre within a range of social, educational and community contexts;
    8. the reading, analysis, documenting, and interpreting of combined performance; and
    9. the performance and production skills necessary to communicate with audiences.

  2. Intellectual Development and Skills
    1. to read, understand and engage analytically with a range of texts, performances, and other source material;
    2. to foster critical thought and critical analysis;
    3. to research, evaluate, and apply information from a number of sources (written, visual, aural) in order to develop and present a coherent understanding of the theory and practice of combined performance studies;
    4. to evaluate performance events;
    5. to undertake and manage extended independent and creative research;
    6. to understand processes of creativity and appraise them;
    7. to analyse and document the theoretical/practical processes of performance;
    8. to understand and apply appropriate interdisciplinary practices, concepts and skills;
    9. to present coherent arguments, verbally and in writing, especially involving interdisciplinarity;
    10. 10. to understand the relationships of performance within a range of critical, historical, and cultural frameworks for its production and reception;
    11. to engage in local/international debates on the performing arts, combined productions and interdisciplinarity, cultural policy and funding;
    12. to engage in archive/library/internet research; and
    13. to strengthen and promote the aspects of performance as research.

    4. to undertake research, including bibliographical and documentation techniques, performance and textual analysis, as well as other research methodologies that are particular to the performing arts, individually, collectively and interdisciplinary;

    6. to support creative work with research, appropriate documentation and conceptual consideration;
    7. to communicate effectively across a wide range of socio-cultural scenarios involving popular and high-culture events (such as opera 譅an example par excellence of dance-music-theatre interaction);
    8. to take effective decisions about any aspects of combined arts and cultures; and
    9. to enhance your organisational skills by setting aims and objectives for individual and collective projects.

Such careers provide enough opportunities for the integration of interdisciplinary research techniques with innovation aimed at the creation of projects employing the performing arts. The programme is also conceived as one of the pathways for a career in academia.
